“Born and raised in this world where work and family are one,

I tried to give my children a strong bond

with our traditions and the values that unite us to this land,

which gives us so much but also expects a lot. ”

In the fourteenth century there are the first traces of the tabernacle around which the current Church of Madonna degli Angeli was built in the 16th century, a small chapel that houses the famous fresco “Madonna with Child” attributed to Bartolo di Fredi, exponent of the Sienese school.
A private chapel that every year in May was opened to the public on the occasion of the celebrations in honor of the Virgin. Today owned by the Pacenti Family, it was completely restored in 2001 and family ceremonies are still celebrated.

As early as 1400, the Canalicchio was an important center of reference for the agricultural market of the Val di Suga, a meeting place, linked to the relationships favored by road conditions and seasonal cycles, and a stop for merchants and sharecroppers. Outside the city but not far from the district of the Municipality, there was a network of routes that connected the Val d’Orcia, the Val di Chiana, the Val d’Arbia, the Maremma and Monte Amiata*. Livestock, wheat, wine and olive oil were the main livelihoods of a Tuscany still intact in its authentic agrarian tradition.

The origins of the Piacenti Family – later transformed into Pacenti – of noble Tuscan lineage, date back to the 13th century: Muccio Piacenti, maternal grandfather of the famous Santa Caterina da Siena, Patroness of Italy and Europe, was among the most popular and well-known poets of his time.

The Pacenti Family settles in Montalcino leading the land in sharecropping, moving from one farm to another, raising livestock, cultivating wheat, vines and olive trees. The sharecropping system obliged the sharecropper to work the land, dividing the agricultural products in half with the owner; at the time in Montalcino, the cultivated land in sharecropping represented 90%.

Rosildo Pacenti, born in 1924, son of a family of peasant origins, inherited a passion for the land. Bold and farsighted, he crowns the dream of setting up on his own by purchasing the Canalicchio farm in 1962 and he is among the first farmers to believe strongly in the potential of Montalcino and to enhance the Sangiovese, a vine that is able to reach excellence on this hill. This is how the original company nucleus took shape with the first bottle produced by Brunello di Montalcino, vintage 1966.
Image
The end of sharecropping, the second world war and the industrial revolution in large cities leave Montalcino in its small but poor agricultural reality; only those who courageously decide to stay will give it life, with the foundation of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino in 1967, becoming one of the most prestigious Italian wines. The Pacenti Family will be among the 25 founding fathers.

Born in 1958, Franco Pacenti, much more inclined to work in the fields than at his studies, joins his father Rosildo in his adolescence, contributing to the growth and development of the company right from the first steps.
Image
Franco, now sure of his wealth of experience, took over the management from his father in 1988, restoring the historic cellar below the old family farm. A scrupulous winemaker and convinced traditionalist, for him the work in the vineyard is life, planting new Sangiovese vineyards, imprinting territorial features with a strict and classic interpretation.

In 1986 Lisa, the eldest daughter of Franco, was born, and a few years later the twins Serena and Lorenzo arrived, running the year 1990.
Grandpa Rosildo looks proudly at his grandchildren, now he is sure that his work and sweat have not been in vain, it will soon be repaid with the new generation.
Image
With the success of the Brunello brand, Franco transformed the Canalicchio from a multi-purpose company to an internationally recognized company, specialized in viticulture. Reaching to an extension of 10 hectares of vineyards, it was necessary to create a new, functional, spacious cellar, with state-of-the-art equipment and well integrated into the landscape of the Val d’Orcia, a Unesco Heritage site since 2004.
Image
In recent years, Franco’s three children, Lisa, Serena and Lorenzo, assist the father in the operation, each dealing with a specific working environment, putting into practice their knowledge for which they earned their studies.
The third generation and lifeblood of this company, are the guardians of the traditions handed down and their task is to look to the future by renewing the values and the bond for this land.
Image
Following in the footsteps of their father and grandfather, Lisa, Serena and Lorenzo, bring freshness and innovation into the company, renewing the brand identity with the reinterpretation of the historical brand in a contemporary way.
The restyling gives life to the brand and a totally new graphic that maintains elegance and refinement, in a perfect balance between tradition and modernity, involving first of all the creation of new labels.
Proud of their own achievement and happy to share work, history and all that makes these wines unique, invest energy and resources on Wine Hospitality, developing hospitality and visits to the winery, a privileged moment to let all the wine lovers know the secrets of the world of Brunello and enjoy the Tuscan landscape that will frame a unique experience.
